Privacy Audit
Facebook
Does not claim ownership of anything, but by creating an account, you give Facebook " a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook." This license expires when a user deletes their account.
My privacy settings have everything set to private, so I am not using the default privacy settings. I do not grant advertisers or third party users, with the exception of any applications I may make use of, the right to use my information or content. Other unknown Facebook users may not view my profile.
Gmail
By creating an account you give Google a license that essentially allows for them to "display, distribute and promote the Services." This license also lets Google make your content available to "companies, organizations or individuals with whom Google has relationships for the provision of syndicated services, and to use such Content in connection with the provision of those services." Deleting your account results in the ending of the license.
I am using the standard privacy settings for Gmail, with the exception of only granting other Gmail users the ability to view my personal information.
eBay
With the license a user grants eBay, the user gives them a "non-exclusive, worldwide, perpetual, irrevocable, royalty-free, sublicensable (through multiple tiers) right to exercise any and all copyright, trademark, publicity, and database rights (but no other rights) you have in the content, in any media known now or in the future." Even after removing an account, said content can still be used after terminating the relationship with eBay.
I am using the standard privacy settings for eBay.
Tumblr
The user owns all of their content, but the user gives Tumblr "a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, transferable right and license (with the right to sublicense), to use, copy, cache, publish, display, distribute, modify, create derivative works and store such Subscriber Content and to allow others to do so in order to provide the Services."
I am using the standard privacy settings for Tumblr.
SoundCloud
In addition to a similar license as the other services where the user retains ownership of content but grants the service the right to use the content almost exclusively while a contract/account exists between the two, Tumblr accepts no responsibility for the content or how it is used.
I am using the standard privacy settings for SoundCloud.
Cookies
Cookies from all five services are stored, in addition to some from a few third party advertisers. It seems as if each service can use my search history, especially Google, for a number of purposes, the main one being for targeted advertising. However, since my browser's settings are to erase everything every time the program is closed, the information they receive changes from session to session.

Digital Photography
October 29, 1993
This documentary looks like at early digital photography technologies and their development. It includes information on the Kodak Photo CD Player, the DaVinci Digital Camera/Copier, the Kodak DCS200 digital camera, the SuperMac printer, Logitech's FotoMan, the OFOTO 2.0 scanner, the Phoenix portable digital imaging system for newspapers, the MacSat and WeatherFAX systems for enhancing digital space photos, and even an early version of Adobe Photoshop. The video mentions how digitization of photography has created a revolution and this demonstration gives first hand evidence of how these technologies make photography and editing easier. It was originally broadcast in February of 1993.

Lab Exercise 8: Streaming Video
Hulu
Player:
-Adobe Flash
Strengths:
-Once it has initially buffered, the entire video usually plays out until the end with no breaks, with the exception of commercials.
-Allows the user to choose which resolution they wish to view the video.
-Allows for full screen, the dimming of the surrounding browser, sharing, and embedding of the video.
-Can show full TV show episodes.
-Uses less compression than Youtube
-Clean and minimalist user interface, making it easy to understand
Weaknesses:
-Short advertisement breaks. This could also be seen as a strength, however, as the advertisements are short.
-Limited by the television networks as to which shows are available and when
Internet Browsers: Internet Explorer 8, Firefox, and Chrome all function with Hulu correctly. In fact, Hulu was able to stream the same video to all three browsers at the same time without even a stutter in the video stream.
Youtube
Player:
-Adobe Flash
Strengths:
-Almost unlimited choice of short videos.
-Allows the user to choose which resolution they wish to view the video.
-Allows for fullscreen, expansion, embedding, and commenting on the video.
Weaknesses:
-Slower initial load time (comparative to Hulu)
-Continues to slow down slightly if the video is viewed while still loading
-Advertisement pop-ups on the video and around it.
-Busy and cluttered user interface, but since everyone knows how to use Youtube, this isn't an issue.
Internet Browsers: The same video viewed in Firefox and Chrome took slightly longer to load in Internet Explorer 8. However, it is hardly noteworthy as the delay was minuscule. Youtube functions the same in each of these three browsers.
Veoh
Player:
-Adobe Flash
Strengths:
-Quick buffer speed, allowing for pause-less viewing, with the exception of commercials.
-Streams well, and similar to Hulu, but not as appealing
-Short advertisements only at the beginning of the video
Weaknesses:
-Few viewing options
-Does not allow for resolution changes
-Cluttered and unappealing user interface
-Uninviting viewing experience
-Limited content options
Internet Browsers: Veoh operates correctly with Internet Explorer 8, Firefox, and Chrome.
Embedded Videos:
Hulu
Youtube
Veoh
Most video streaming websites have a few things that are standard. Embedding is one those things and almost all popular streaming sites have an easy to access code. This is true for Hulu, Youtube, and Veoh. Although it should be noted that Internet Explorer 8 has trouble with, or supporting, embedded videos on Blogger. This is not true for Firefox or Chrome as it operates correctly in these browsers.

Notes on Lab 5: I apologize for the few spots where formatting may be inconsistent. I have tried multiple times to edit the sections that have odd/inconsistent spacing, and while it is formatted correctly in the edit window, once it is published Blogger re-formats it. If I knew HTML better I could probably edit the leftover piece of code that is probably floating around and upsetting my chosen format. Also, I used EBSCO to find all of the above journals and articles. It has the nice feature of explaining whether a journal is an academic, scholarly, trade, or periodical piece.
